In many ways I’ve been working as a therapist all my life. I’m one of those who others are naturally drawn to share things that they wouldn’t share with their nearest and dearest. Ever since childhood I’ve been a magnet for people’s life stories, problems and conundrums.
I find humans infinitely interesting and over the years have been privileged and honoured to be able to tell their stories, often for the wider good via a career in journalism and communications. Raising awareness of disease, sharing the plight of those disenfranchised by global politics, alerting others to predatory behaviours, reporting on women’s issues… all of this meant listening as others shared their life experiences and emotions surrounding them.
I wanted to actually do something. Something of value, meaning and purpose. So, I used my listening and communication skills as I embarked on a journey of learning and discovery, working my way through several levels of qualifications until four years and many hours of client work later, I qualified as a therapeutic counsellor.
The work remains an honour and a privilege. And the journey of learning will never end.
You’ll be reassured to hear that I’m not only qualified, but I’m a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This means that I agree to adhere to the BACP’s code of ethics and that my work is supervised by a more experienced counsellor to check I’m working in a safe manner.
My work is also insured and I’m committed to continuing my learning and updating my skills and knowledge through ongoing education and continuous professional development.
I hold a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and have experience of working with complex grief via my work with the bereavement support team at St Christopher's Hospice. I also work in substance misuse rehabilitation services, working with clients dealing with drug and alcohol dependency and also offer support to their family members and carers.
Alongside a varied private practice, I work with clients dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis as the resident therapist at The Primrose Centre in Orpington.
